5 Essential Tips for Operating Spider Lifts Safely in UK Winter Weather
Safely Operating spider lifts in winter can be a challenge, this blog will outline some tips to keep you and your team safe. Winter brings unique challenges to construction, maintenance, and arboriculture projects across the UK. Cold temperatures, icy ground, and wet conditions dramatically impact the safe operation of all heavy machinery, especially tracked spider lifts (or tracked access platforms).
While spider lifts are known for their all-terrain capability and low ground pressure, winter demands extra care. Here are five essential tips from our experts at Global Platforms to ensure maximum safety and performance when operating your spider lift in adverse winter weather.
1. Ground Conditions: Managing Ice and Soft Terrain
A spider lift’s tracks give it excellent stability, but ice and excessive moisture pose two distinct risks:
- Risk 1: Sliding on Ice: The rubber tracks can lose traction on hard-packed snow or ice during travel, and deploying the outriggers (stabiliser legs) on an icy patch can be extremely dangerous.
- Tip: Always clear the immediate work area of ice and snow before deployment. If using the machine on a paved or concrete area, consider laying anti-slip mats under the outriggers for secure, non-slip placement.
- Risk 2: Soft Ground: Heavy winter rain can make previously firm ground dangerously soft.
- Tip: Use ground protection mats or spreader plates extensively to distribute the machine’s load and prevent the tracks or outriggers from sinking, which can compromise stability.
2. Pre-Operation Checks: Focus on Hydraulics and Power
Cold weather is harsh on machinery. Your daily pre-operation inspection must focus on components affected by freezing temperatures.
- Hydraulic Hoses: Check hoses for any cracks or stiffness, as rubber can become brittle in the cold. Look for any fluid leaks, as cold oil is thicker and can struggle to circulate.
- Battery Power (Electric/Hybrid Models): Cold significantly reduces battery efficiency. Ensure hybrid and electric spider lifts are fully charged before starting the shift.
- Diesel/Fuel System: If using a diesel engine, ensure you have the appropriate winter-grade fuel to prevent fuel line waxing or freezing. Always allow the engine to warm up properly before operating the boom functions.
3. Working at Height: Wind, Visibility, and PPE
Safety at height is magnified by winter conditions:
- Wind Speed: Cold air is denser than warm air, meaning gusts can have a greater physical effect on the basket and boom. Always check the manufacturer’s specified maximum wind speed and never exceed it. Wind speeds are often higher at elevation.
- Visibility: With shorter daylight hours and potential fog or mist, visibility is reduced.
- Tip: Ensure all machine lights and safety beacons are fully functional, and that ground crew and operators wear high-visibility, weather-appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
4. Platform and Controls: Preventing Slips and Freezing
The work platform itself presents a major slip hazard during winter.
- Grip and Drainage: Clear the platform floor of any ice, snow, or pooled water before entry. Wet metal and non-slip surfaces can become slick with freezing rain.
- Icy Controls: Use gloved hands to operate controls, but make sure your gloves do not restrict your dexterity. Never attempt to “force” frozen joystick controls—this can damage the electronics or hydraulic valves.
5. Post-Operation Care: Protecting the Machine
Taking care of the spider lift after the job is just as important as the pre-start check.
- Storage: Whenever possible, store the machine inside a warm, dry facility overnight. If outdoor storage is necessary, cover exposed electrical and hydraulic components.
- Cleaning: Thoroughly clean off mud, salt, and debris immediately after the job. Road salt and grit are highly corrosive and can cause significant damage to the lift’s chassis and wiring over time.
