Tracked Cherry Picker Hire: Why Tracks Beat Wheels on Site

A cherry picker on wheels does the job on a flat, made-up surface. The moment the ground is soft, sloped, or something worth protecting, tracks change what’s possible. Tracked access spreads the machine’s weight across a wider footprint, which is why it’s become the default choice for landscaped grounds, active construction sites, and anywhere a wheeled platform would rut the ground or need boards laid first.

What tracked access gives you that wheels don’t

Tracks hold their line on uneven or compacted ground, loose aggregate, and gradients that would stop a wheeled boom. They spread load more evenly across a wider contact area, which matters on newly laid surfaces, turfed areas, or anywhere ground protection would otherwise add time and cost to a job. Outriggers on a tracked machine can also be levelled individually, so the platform sets up safely even where the ground itself is uneven, without packing or matting first.

For arboriculture, estate maintenance, and construction sites still being built out, that’s often the difference between a straightforward lift and a job that needs matting, banksmen, or a different machine entirely. It also tends to mean less time spent preparing the ground before work starts, since the machine is built to cope with the surface as it is.

Where tracked cherry pickers earn their keep

The most common calls we get fall into a handful of patterns. Landscaped grounds and recently turfed areas, where a wheeled machine would leave visible tracks or compress the soil. Active construction and groundworks sites, where the surface changes week to week and there’s no guarantee of a made-up run to the working area. Sloped or terraced sites, including older properties and heritage grounds, where a wheeled platform simply can’t hold a safe line. And jobs where the client has specifically asked for no ground damage, which covers everything from historic estates to premium retail environments.

Tree and estate maintenance teams use tracked platforms for exactly the same reason: get to height, do the work, and leave without a mark on the ground underneath. The same applies to event and production work, where access often has to cross finished landscaping or event flooring that can’t be scarred.

Tracked or wheeled: which fits your site?

Where a site is flat, made-up ground with good road access, a wheeled cherry picker can set up and move between jobs faster than a tracked machine. Once the ground turns soft, sloped, or needs protecting, tracks are the safer and quicker option, since there’s no matting or banking to arrange first. We ask about the ground before we ask about reach, because that’s usually what decides the machine, not the height needed. Getting this wrong in either direction costs time: a wheeled machine stuck on soft ground, or a tracked machine booked for a job a wheeled platform would have done for less.

Self-drive or operated hire

Self-drive hire suits teams with IPAF-certified operators already on site, and gives you full control over scheduling once the machine arrives. Operated hire brings one of our own trained operators alongside the machine, which is usually the better choice for one-off jobs, tighter access, or sites where ground conditions need an experienced eye before the platform moves. Ground assessment happens before the machine does. We check load-bearing capacity, gradient, and any underground services or soft spots along the access route, and agree a method statement before work starts on site.
