Access Platforms for Shopping Centres and Retail Units

A shopping centre or retail unit is rarely empty when access equipment needs to go in, and that changes what the job actually requires. Alongside working height and reach, you need equipment that works around trading hours, protects the flooring underneath it, and doesn’t put shoppers or staff at risk while the unit next door stays open. Here’s what we think through on these jobs, and the equipment we use to do it.

Working Around a Trading Centre, Not Instead of It

Closing a centre, a mall concourse or a unit isn’t usually an option, so access work has to fit around trading rather than replace it. That means agreeing exclusion zones with centre management, coordinating with on-site security, and keeping the working area contained so shoppers and neighbouring units aren’t affected while the job’s underway.

Non-Marking Tracks and Protecting Flooring

Polished, tiled and natural stone flooring is common in retail environments, and it’s expensive to mark or crack. A tracked spider MEWP spreads its load across four outriggers rather than concentrating it on a small wheel footprint, and non-marking rubber tracks reduce the risk of scuffing to finished flooring. Where a surface needs extra protection, we can also use boards or pads under the outrigger feet. We check the floor loading and finish at survey, not after the machine’s already on it.

Out-of-Hours and Overnight Access

Much of this work happens outside trading hours, early morning, late evening or overnight, so the centre opens as normal with no sign anyone’s been in. We plan the access window with your centre operations team in advance, so the job’s done and cleared before footfall picks up.

Getting Through Restricted Entrances and Mall Floor Plans

Service corridors, goods lifts and standard door openings are usually the only way in, there’s rarely a loading bay or external crane access to a mall interior. The Hinowa Lightlift 17.75 tracks through a standard double door, then folds out its outriggers once it’s inside, which is what lets it reach a concourse, an atrium or a unit a larger wheeled machine couldn’t get anywhere near.

What We Check Before We Quote

We survey every retail site before quoting: floor loading and finish, access routes and door widths, headroom and any ceiling-mounted screens, signage or services the platform needs to work around, and the access window the centre can actually offer. That’s what gets the right machine on site in the right window, rather than a generic quote that changes once someone’s walked the route.

Getting Access Equipment Into Your Centre or Retail Site

If you manage a shopping centre, retail park or individual unit and have access work coming up, get in touch and we’ll survey the site and work out the access window, equipment and floor protection it needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a tracked platform damage shopping centre flooring?

A spider MEWP’s tracks and outriggers spread the load more evenly than a wheeled machine, and non-marking tracks reduce the risk of scuffing. We confirm the floor finish and loading at survey and use boards or pads under the outriggers where extra protection is needed.

Do you offer overnight or out-of-hours access?

Yes, we regularly plan access work for early morning, evening or overnight windows so it doesn’t affect trading hours or footfall.
