Scaffold or MEWP for Commercial Sites

Scaffold and Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) hire both get people safely to height, and both have their place on a commercial or industrial site. The wrong choice costs you money, either in wasted hire time or in a job that takes longer than it should. This guide sets out how to choose between them, based on the job, not the sales pitch.

What sets scaffold and MEWP apart

Scaffold is a static structure. Once it’s up, several trades can work from it at the same time, at multiple levels, for as long as the job needs. It takes time and labour to erect and dismantle, and it needs a competent scaffolder to design, build and inspect it correctly.

A MEWP is mobile. One or two operators go up, do the task, and move on, whether that’s to the next elevation, the next building, or off site entirely. It’s hired for the time it’s needed and can be repositioned in minutes rather than dismantled and rebuilt.

Neither is better in general. The right one depends on your programme, your site and what the job actually requires.

When scaffold is the better choice

• The work will run for several weeks or months, so a structure that stays in place is more efficient than repeated MEWP hire
• Several trades need access to the same elevation at the same time, such as bricklayers, renderers and roofers working in sequence
• Materials or tools need to be stored at height for the duration of the job
• Edge or perimeter protection is needed continuously, not just while someone is working
• Vehicle or crane access for a MEWP is restricted and a built structure is more practical than repeated machine movements

When MEWP hire is the better choice

• The task is short: an inspection, a repair, a sign change, a section of cladding
• You need access to several different points across a site or building in a single day
• The site needs to keep operating and can’t have a static structure in the way
• The programme is tight and there isn’t time for scaffold design, erection and a building inspector sign-off
• Ground conditions are uneven or access is restricted, in which case a tracked spider MEWP may be the only powered option that fits

Cost and programme

Scaffold hire is charged by the week regardless of how much it’s used, and carries a labour cost to erect and dismantle before and after the job itself. That makes sense when the structure is in near-constant use over a long period. A MEWP is charged for the access time itself, with no build or strip-down cost, which makes it the cheaper option for short or occasional tasks, but the day rate adds up over an extended job. We work this out with you against your actual programme, not a generic rate card.

Safety and compliance either way

Whichever method suits the job, the process is the same: a site survey before anything is quoted, a method statement and risk assessment specific to the task, competent, briefed crews, and inspection and handover documentation you can put in front of an auditor.
